Cub Cadet - 33" wide cut walk behind-ONLY GOOD FOR SCRAP METAL
I made the mistake of buying a Cub Cadet 33" wide cut walk behind at Home Depot. It had been 'reconditioned' so only had a one year warranty but I checked it and it looked like a great buy. Looks are deceiving! Repairs so far have exceeded $300 not including the $700 it would cost to repair it this time.
1) The belts jump off constantly. Had to take it to an 'authorized' service center after only 1 month for adjustment. This 'repair' lasted a few months and then it started again. Constantly on my back under an extremely poorly designed unit to put them back on.
2) Cables are trash. I've replaced the same drive cable 4 times in 3 years at $30 plus a pop and one of the brake cables twice. Intelligent design did not come into play on this unit.
3) Deck level handle is extremely weak. The handle snapped in two 7 days out of warranty. Was not covered even though it was obvious from the break that the piece was defective in the first place. Cheap piece of thin metal.
4) The gear lever constantly comes loose. Have to bust my knuckles to tighten it back up regularly. Another poor design feature.
5) The coup de grace: 3 years and 6 months old and the frame broke holding the transmission/rear axel on the machine at all four bolts. Another design flaw and probably started breaking the first time I mowed.
Of course, out of warranty, whether new or reconditioned is irrelevant. This thing is junk and MTD doesn't stand behind their products, even their so-called top of the line. No chance on earth I will ever buy any product from any line MTD sells ever again. At least I'll get a dollar or two at the scrap yard for it.
Monetary Loss: $1400.

Same problem with frame cracking....causes drive belt to fall off due to deck instability when cracked...eventually frame broke...fixed it by fabricating some brackets....now all back together and gear box not engaging....junk!!
Agree...frame assembly broke after four years on mine. Replaced control cables once.
Blades hard to balance under deck--keep 90-degree spacing--belts appear to slip on their own. Mower deck does not float so corners/curves do not mow level.
Everything was fine until it wasn't in the third year. Now warranty is gone and I have a lump of metal and plastic.
I've had the 33" Walk Behind for 8 years and have never had an issue. The only thing that just came up is I have to replace the drive cable which cracked by the handle.
Other then that, runs strong and I do very little maintenance to it.
If you were having an issue off the bat, you should have returned it immediately. HD will take anything back.
Same issue with Craftsman pro 33" walk behind.
model 247-88****/81
Exact same problems except for the cables but maybe that is on the way. The cracked frame is ridiculous.
If it were a Honda they would have replaced it no charge. This mower is trash.
I used to respect the Cub Cadet name. Not any more.
Same mower. 2010 33" walk behind Cub Cadet.
POS.
At least 1 cable breaks per year.
Less than 5 years use on just 1/2 acre flat lawn and now all 4
bolts that hold tranny to frame have cracked. Whole tranny moves
left/right about an inch. Pully hits belt keeper bars. Almost cut them in half.
Belts fall off all the time. The whole machine is now junk.
CUB CADET = NEVER AGAIN !!!!
I've had the exact same issues, exactly the same. You would think you were describing my mower.
Bottom line, it's garbage. I have a 14 y/o push mower that's more dependable. The durability for cutting a level 1/3 acre, once a week, is unsat. It's an engineering disaster.
Mine is a 2011 model that's had regular maintenance and it has been stored in a garage. If you are considering this model, please consider another cub cadet.
The problem with the cracked frame at the place where the transmission bolts on makes me think this is an older CC 760, prior to 2010. The units since then come with reinforcing plates welded to the frame on both sides where the transmission is bolted.
If you or the repair shop had noticed the cracks prior to the warranty expiration, they would have replaced the frame at no charge. The early units did have issues that appear to have been addressed in later model years.
No they do not I got mine in 2016 an I swear I will never ever ever in my life even look at a Machine made by cub cadet there warreny sucks they will not work with you even though itโs there fault for selling a piece of sh.... mower like this I would recommend you block cub cadet from your eyes perspective that way you will never regret buying this mower worst decision Iโve ever made in my entire life never again
Where can i get the drive cable from? My mower stopped pulling on me in the middle of a yard. I flipped the mower over and find myself looking at the cable just hanging it snapped in half.
Google authorized Cub Cadet dealers in your area. They would have, or could order the part you need. You could also probably find it on Amazon if you know the part #.
so let me see if i understand this. you bought a walk behind from home depot and expected to get commercial quality product?
LOL this isnt a cub cadet problem this is a *** problem. guess who's the ***
No but it should at least cut your yard one time without having to go to the shop for weeks. Iโm going on two months now my lawn looks like a jungle I fear snakes biting my kids and dogs I have extended warranty not a cheap addition to total cost and two months in shop and still not fixed.
I have yet to mow my yard one time completely since purchase.
The longest period of time mower sat at my house instead of shop was winter...go figure. Do not get this mower unless you like to waste money if thatโs the case *** I got one Iโll sell ya still under warranty for four more years.
Just got it back from shop today to take to another shop per their recommendations and I didnโt get all my mower back...these are certified people they have recommended. I donโt know Iโve only owned small time businesses but my reputation was behind ever sell every vendor anywhere my name was my pride was right behind it. If you take a loss sometimes you do...you live n learn n get better but my customers were never dissatisfied with whom I was and what I represented.
